`Sidney POITIER, American-Bahamian trailblazing, activist and first Black actor Oscar winner dies aged 94 on January 6th 2022. Poitier struggled against great odds to become one of the first Black actors to take on major US film roles. He earned countless accolades, including becoming the first Black man to win an Oscar for Best Actor in 1964. He paved the way for countless other Black actors. Poitier was also an activist, director and ambassador to his native home of The Bahamas. The world is saddened by the news of the death of Sidney Poitier. Upon learning of his death, tributes immediately poured in from fans and celebrities alike. The film director, activist, philanthropist, diplomat, and author was the definition of a true trailblazer. His excellence, grace, and sheer passion for the arts is enough to cement his legacy as an iconic film star. But for Black actors specifically, Sidney’s body of work changed the face of Hollywood forever, and it’s his accomplishments that we have to thank for breaking down so many doors for today’s stars.
Just looking back at his many standout roles — including A Raisin in the SunThe Defiant OnesNo Way OutLilies of the Field, and To Sir, With Love, to name a few — Sidney’s multidecade pioneering career gave many actors a path to aspire to in their own endeavors. Beyond the silver screen, Sidney dedicated his life to humanitarianism, specifically from his native Bahamas. He served as a Bahamian ambassador to Japan from 1997 to 2007, as well as a vocal civil rights advocate for Black actors throughout his life. Not enough can be said to highlight all of Sidney’s countless, tremendous contributions, but you can read about some of his best moments ahead.
Denzel Washington, like many Black actors, idolized the late Sidney Poitier.During an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live on Monday, Denzel recalled the moment he met Sidney, Hollywood’s first Black movie star, and how their friendship progressed. Following the Bahamian’s death, Denzel told Today about their cherished friendship. “You know, we had a 40-some-odd-year relationship, so I’m still digesting all of that and he was the beacon. He was the one we all followed and it was an honor to be able to call him a friend,” he told the outlet. Sidney was the first Black actor to win best actor at the Oscars, and Denzel is one of three other Black actors to have won in that category.
Sidney POITIER ’s family remembered the Hollywood giant as a humanitarian, a leader and a devoted artis tin a statement issued Friday evening, a day after his death at the age of 94. ‘His legacy will live on in the world, continuing to inspire not only with his incredible body of work, but even more so with his humanity.We would like to extend our deepest appreciation to every single one of you for the outpouring of love from around the world,”the family continued. So many have been touched by our dad’s extraordinary life, his unwavering sense of decency and respect for his fellow man. His faith in humanity never faltered, so know that for all the love you’ve shown him, he loved you back.”
